The Nicolet-Shorewood Ski Team kicked off their season racing giant slalom at Sunburst on Wednesday night against Badger, Menomonee Falls/Germantown/Sussex; Oconomowoc, and Brookfield East. It has been a tough start to the season with the warm weather and the athletes have not been able to run gates in training. Ryan Optekar’s (Shorewood) 4th place finish along with solid efforts by freshmen Hunter Rauen (Shorewood) in 12th and Brogan Robert’s (Shorewood) helped the team to a 3rd place finish. Hayden Summ (Nicolet) also ripped a great 2nd run in the race. This young squad competed well against the top teams in the Midwest High School Ski Conference and it will be interesting to track their progress and see if they can qualify as a team for the State Championships.
Anna Glaisner (Nicolet) had a 6th place overall finish in the Varsity Girls race with Avi Dickman (Nicolet) finishing 10th in an impressive showing. Marigold O’Connor’s (Nicolet) 4th place finish in the JV Girls race helped lead the team to a 1st place finish!! Isla Marks (Shorewood), Zella Tomasi (Shorewood), Claire Pielmeier (Shorewood), Annemarie Melbye (Nicolet) took spots 9 through 12 in the race demonstrating the depth of the team. The team next races slalom at Heiliger Huegel on January 11th.

The Nicolet German Club held its annual Hexenhaus Competition. Students had 75 minutes to create structures and "sell" them to a judging panel. The senior DEP entry, a homage to the Chicago Weihnachtsmarkt took top prize this this year. Congrats to Ben, Hannah, Josie, Mia & Vika!

Nicolet senior, Jaia Underwood placed 1st in the state in the 2023 Wisconsin Association of School Boards Art Exhibition. Jaia earned this award for her painting entitled, “Snack Time” In addition to being recognized for her work, Jaia will be receiving a $750, generously provided by Performance Services. Her work was on display during the WASB Convention from January 17 & 18 at the Baird Center in Milwaukee, along with work created by students from all over the state of Wisconsin.

The Nicolet peer to peer tutoring and writing mentor program has continued to soar to new heights with all time records being set in the number of students providing tutoring and writing mentoring to classmates, the number of hours tutors and mentors are committing to each month, and the overall impact the Nicolet peer to peer tutoring and writing mentor programs are having on academic achievement across the building (including Nicolet's first bilingual tutors and mentors)! Today, we had a chance to celebrate our TOP 12 highest grossing tutors and mentors (based on the number of appointments they had throughout the first semester).

French Club held its annual Yule Log baking contest. Over 20 bakers entered the competition and baked 10 beautiful yule log cakes, a traditional dessert eaten in France, Switzerland and Belgium. Our four judges (Ms. Glodoski, Ms. Terry, Ms. Wathen and Ms. Walny) picked two winning teams who were awarded a gift card to the North Shore Bakery 🎂
