Carter G. Woodson is credited with being the founder of Black History Month. Often referred to as the “Father of Black History,” he was notably the second African American to graduate from Harvard University with a doctorate degree, and is credited with being one of the first scholars to study and research the history of African Americans. Initially a week long celebration, President Ford officially declared February to be Black History Month in 1976. SE WI Scholastic Writing Region, with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, presented Lukas Vater with 3 awards; Honorable Mention in the Novel Writing Category for "The Nightlight," and two HMs in the Short Story Category for "The Curtain" & "Devil's Run." Congrats Lukas!

Three Nicolet German students have been named semifinalists for the 2023-24 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange. Sponsored by the US State Department, this program sends a select group of young Americans to Germany for a year to attend school and act as unofficial ambassadors. Congrats and good luck to juniors Leila Emir and Tyler Friedel as well as senior Lauren Weber. All three have been active in a wide array of activities at Nicolet and were members of the 2022 GAPP Exchange with the Gymnasium Leopoldinum.
Nicolet Union High School will be transitioning to a VIRTUAL LEARNING DAY on Thursday, February 16th due to the forecasted hazardous weather and travel conditions.
Conferences for tomorrow evening have been CANCELED and parent/guardians are being encouraged to reach out to their student's teachers directly if they'd like an update on their student's progress. All after school activities, practices, and games are also CANCELED for tomorrow.
Today we recognize the valuable work of school resource officers during National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day.
SROs are carefully selected, specifically trained, sworn law enforcement officers assigned to work with schools using community-oriented policing concepts. Nicolet's SRO Marissa Myers went into policing with the goal of becoming a school resource officer. She now has her "dream job." and her favorite part is the relationships she has built with students and staff. Thank you Officer Myers, we appreciate all you do to keep our school safe!

Jason McGowan, a Coast Guard Culinary Specialist, was in Marie Schroeder's culinary classes last week to do a cooking demo based on Caribbean/Cuban cuisine. They made fried plantain with 3 fantastic sauces; guacamole, a New Orleans remoulade, and Mayochup.
Congratulations to Advisor Nicole Mueller and the Nicolet Model United Nations team for a fabulous competition at the University of Chicago! Working with 3000 other students, the team authored resolutions, built coalitions, founded new countries, blew up Mars, and trained a llama army. Special shout-out to Adrienne Lee, who was chosen as one of the outstanding delegates in her simulation -- and well done Georgia Porter, Daniel Ramirez, Derek Chan, Kristen Laiosa. April Hellman, Maia Bozovich, Joey Drouin, Orly Boland, Jack Graskamp, Hannah Janicik, Katya Ravie, Neeraj Bhogavilli, Alex Anoma, Ellee Tabak, Layla Caples, Nyla Deans, Taylor Abbott, and Gavin Babusiak for stellar performances!

Parent-Teacher Conferences are next week February 15th and 16th. Wednesday conferences will be done virtually via zoom. The window for signing up for virtual conferences is now open and closes on Tuesday, the 14th, at 12;00 PM. Parent/Guardians will receive a link to their Zoom conference the afternoon of the 14th. Instructions for sign up were sent via email on January 31st.
In-Person conferences are done on a first come, first serve basis.
